How to create a facebook app

Before writing more advanced tutorials, I’ve decided to start with the basics. Facebook changed their interface in 2014, which might be confusing for some developers. Especially for the beginners.

In this tutorials we’ll cover the basics of creating a new Facebook Application.

First go to https://developers.facebook.com/ and click on Apps > Create a New App.

create new app facebook

Display Name -> The name of your new application
Namespace -> The end of the url of your app. For example http://apps.facebook.com/mysuperapp
For Category in this case we should choose “Apps for Pages”.

I’m not sure if it’s a moment bug, but you might not get redirected. So if nothing happens after you click on “Create app”, check if your application is created. Click on Apps -> See all apps, and try to find your new application.

After you do that, click on Settings. Then click on +Add Platform button and choose the type of platform you will develop app for.

Facebook App Settings

Finally don’t forget to turn off canvas mode. When your app is in Canvas Mode, then it’s visible only for the app developers. To make it visible to the general public, go to Status & Review and change the button to Yes.

turn off canvas mode

Then a green light will appear after your App Name.

That’s it, you have successfully created your first facebook application.
